HOW DOES A WATER HEATER WORK?
It all depends on what kind of unit you have. The two major types of water heaters are the conventional storage water heaters with a tank and tankless water heaters. Here’s a basic primer on how each operates.
Storage water heaters with a tank. Cold water from your water supply, be it public or a well, comes into the water heater tank. It is heated there, and the water heater turns on regularly to make sure the water in the tank is hot whenever you need it.
Tankless water heaters. When a hot water faucet in a sink or an appliance such as your dishwasher or washing machine turns on, the cold water from the lines coming into your home is pulled through the water heater, where a natural gas burner or electric heating element heats the water instantly to your set temperature. That hot water is sent directly to where it is needed.
Each type of water heater has its advantages. A storage water heater is less expensive and has a less complex system than a tankless water heater, meaning you will pay less up front for purchase and installation.
